Ich habe heute festgestellt, dass ich laut Gebrauchsanweisung zu alt für die Hautcreme bin, die sich die zwei Jungs nach der mäßig durchfeierten Nacht ins Gesicht werfen, um beim Morgenmeeting gleich wieder blendend auszusehen.

Und das abgebildete Ding hier fällt schon in die Klasse "Age". Härtere Regeln als beim Kickboxen oder im Jiu Jitsu - dort beginnt die Seniorenklasse auch mit 35...

Dan Zarrella writes a piece about how making yourself bigger helps to get more followers.
He's for sure right that modesty is not very helpful if you want to become famous, but I don't think that calling yourself Guru, Expert or Author is the most sustainable way...

Whenever I have a few spare minutes, I browse through my timeline and unfollow everybody who uses one of these words in his bio.
I'm almost done.

Generally, it's less about calling yourself things, but about doing things - and talking about that.

Dog's Diary...

This video is the winner of the Vimeo Video awards. It documents the last minutes of a dog that is going to be put down.

It's very beautiful, haunting, and really really sad. To all who are into dogs: Take care where and when you watch it...

But I don't agree with the story:

I would never put a dog down just because it has only three legs. That's a human problem: I'm pretty sure that a dog, as soon as the pain is gone, does not care anymore.

I don't think that dogs are here to serve.They pursue their own idea of fun; sometimes with us, sometimes not.

These are the main reasons why I am into dogs. They truly live for the moment, and as long as they can breathe, they are pure lust for life and 100% energy. They always go full throttle (according to their temper) and they are very bad in being pissed.

And I think it does not make sense to talk much about it: You're either into it or not. Not my business - another thing we can learn from dogs.

Hier gibt es keine griffigen Case Studies. "Wie die Tiere" beschaeftigt sich ganz trocken mit der Frage: Warum bedeutet, was wir sagen, ueberhaupt etwas? Wie gehen wir davon aus, zu verstehen und verstanden zu werden? Und warum funktioniert trotz allem immer irgendetwas?

"Wie die Tiere" ist die erste buchfuellende Publikation von kbex micropublishing. Auf 174 in einer begrenzten Einfuehrungsaktion als ebook verfuegbaren Seiten geht Michael Hafner der Frage nach, welche gemeinsamen Horizonte wir in der alltaeglichen Kommunikation noch annehmen duerfen.
Gemeinsamkeiten (seien es Horizonte, Werte oder Informationen) stellen sich dabei als genauso verfaenglich heraus wie die Annahme von letzten Wahrheiten - die ihrerseits wieder nur auf als gemeinsam vorausgesetzten Werten begruendet sind.
Der Text zerstoert heimelige Vorstellungen von Verstaendnis ebenso wie Mythen des Businessalltags: Welche Aussagekraft hat schon ein Businesscase, was - ausser der Vorstellungskraft des Erstellers - wird durch diese Zahlenspiele belegt? Und ist irgendjemand tatsaechlich so, wie er sich Bueroklischees zufolge benehmen sollte?
Brueche werden durch Vielfalt offenbar; je mehr unterschiedliches wir sehen - nicht zuetzt auch dank der neuen Online Medien -, desto eher sind wir bereit, unsere eigene Position als hinterfragbar, als nicht der Weisheit letzter Schluss zu akzeptieren. Vielfalt - im guten wie im schlechten - ist eines der deutlichsten Merkmale aktueller Informations- und Kommunikationsgewohnheite n. Sind wir also auf dem Weg, tolerante, flexible, offene und allwissende Superkommunikatoren zu werden?
Mit destruktivem Charme legt "Wie die Tiere" dar, dass auch Toleranz oft nur ein Mittel ist, die eigene Position zu zementieren: "Die sind halt so", "Interessant", "Eine Tradition in Papua Neuguinea..." - solche und aehnliche bildungsbuergerliche Terrorattacken auf einfache Dinge laden zum ungehemmten Spekulieren ein: Je geringer die Chance ist, dem Gegenstand unserer Spekulation zu begegnen, desto geringer ist auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit, des Unsinns ueberfuehrt zu werden. Das befreit.

Das Anerkennen der grundlegenden Unterschiede zwischen uns und allem anderen ist eine Frage des Respekts. Gemeinsamkeiten vorauszusetzen, Differenzen vor einem gemeinsamen Hintergund zu beschreiben, ist die respektlose Vereinnahmung eines anderen, der genau so Mittelpunkt seiner Welt ist, wie wir Mittelpunkt unserer Welt sind.
Fassungslosigkeit und Gelassenheit sind zwei Seiten derselben Einstellung anderem gegenueber, die durchaus angemessen ist.
"Wir verstehen Sie nicht, Sie verstehen uns nicht - das ist die beste Voraussetzung fuer ein gutes Gespraech."

The World of Dog Prohibition Signs

For a while now, if been taking pictures of variuos Dog Prohibition Signs in every town I've been (if I remembered).

That's not only a design issue and a cultural thing (what do signs tell us about the status of dogs and dog owners), but it's also a kind of civilisation- and freedom-meter.

You can walk through London for a day and you'll probably meet two dogs - if at all. You can walk through Belgrade, and you'll not only see hardly any prohibition sign, but you'll meet tons of wild dogs but also lots of pet dogs.

Sure, it might have to do with the size of the cities, with a status of development and also with money (what other hobbies beside dogs can people afford), but I consider it mainyl as a maybe weird way to measure (personal) freedom:

What can you soo?

What can other creatures do?

How much space do we leave in our urban reservation for other forms of life, human or non-human, besides the bobo-, yuppie- or whatever clichees we so strongly support?

Natuerlich haben die Giganten des Mainstream schon lang die neuen Marktplaetze besetzt. Nischen, die in Angrenzung vom Massenmarkt entstehen, koennen ohne diesen nicht existieren und werden bald von diesem verschluckt. Georg Seesslen warnt im neuen "Freitag" vor grossen Erwartungen der alternativen Kulturindustrie an das Longtail-Konzept von Chris Anderson.
Die nutzbaren Nischen werden immer rarer, weil die grossen sich auch in diese Bereiche vorwagen: die gleichen Wege, die es den Kleinen leicht machen sind eben auch Moeglichkeiten fuer die Grossen.

Cybermobbing and the Art of War

Media are a window to the world; that's a legitimate view. They show things we would not see without them. They don't, in the first place, create things. It's worth to have a closer look on how media shape trends and support cultural changes - but that's another story.

Micropublishing Basics

Microblogging, Microfinancing - does everything have to be small and does it have to move fast? Because there is no time anymore for "real" business?
Micropublishing is sometimes used as a synonym for microblogging. I look at it differently. Blogging is Blogging - that's a way to quickly sketch some thought, spread information, start a discussion.
Publishing is on the one hand more onedirectional (to me), on the other hand, I think of it as a more structured and targeted process: Publishing is not dealing with ideas and sketches, it's not using media as tools, publishing to me means to create products that cover a full process, an idea and it's conclusions from beginning to end.
That's why I think of books, when I think of publishing. And when I think of micropublishing, I think of books from the fringes and for the fringes.

It's been a hot topic these weeks that you should take care of your online reputation - especially if looking for a job or if you are in a relationship (or ever want one).
You get judged by what you publish - tweetpsych.com (by Dan Zarrella) is now there and ready to help others with professional advice on you psychological condition - based on your tweets.
The service analyses 100 tweets and uses linguistic algorithms (LIWC - Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count) and RID (Regressive Imagery Dictionary) to check out what a user is tweeting on, if he is using positive or negative terms and what's his emotional environment.

My twitter-account is talking a lot about work, cognitive processes and abstract thought.
Tweetpsych also works for websites: themashazine.com is talking mainly about social behaviour, is expressing many positive emotions and is also focused on work and abstract thought.

Semantic Web - The Fact Machine?

The Semantic Web is something technical, explained Tassilo Pellegrini, representing Semantic Web Company, in his opening keynote of the APA EBusiness Community Meeting on 27 August. That scared the audience quite a lot: another technology, new products, new marketing lingo, new sales bullshit to be learned and spread.
The discussion turned immediately to question the business case of semantic web application: What's new, how does it support business and where do we make money? - A business case has always two sides, it's not only about making money, but also about spending money. - Where do you actually spend money on the semantic web? And: What's the business case for the Web itself – that's still an unanswered question (and probably will not be answered anymore).
Semantic Web is a way to structure and label data. Standardized metadata make data more precise and therefore, that's the assumption, more useful.
What's the use of it? Targeted advertising is already here, extended product searches that combine many offers even from different sources (vancancies in a hotel combined with restaurants and entertainment facilities nearby) or more human language-style searches (translating free text entries with huge thesauri into structured data) and recommendation engines are the common applications.
Internal knowledge management is of course another nice application, The main objection from a sceptical audience is: “Our people don't have time to create content AND publish it AND describe it with structured data.” - Using online media is a question of the way of working, not a matter of time; I've already said that a few times.
What scared me a little is the approach to data quality, reality and relevance: From 2007 to 2009 the semantic web grew from containing 2 billion “facts” to 10 billion “facts”. I can hardly imagine a way to create, check and approve 8 billion “facts” in two years. - More precision does not always mean more correctness; you can also describe something exactly, precisely – but still wrong. That's the main challenge of the semantic web to me.
